HEARING TESTS

SHAPE provides free hearing testing of motion picture and performing arts workers in occupations deemed as ‘at risk’ of a hearing injury. Any other crew members tested are the responsibility of the production.

Section 7.8(1) of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation states that employers must give workers exposed to noise that exceeds noise exposure limits, hearing tests at least once every 12 months.

As our industries are highly mobile, SHAPE coordinates an industry wide program and through our supplier, Reliable Mobile Hearing, maintains a database of tested workers and results.

Refer here (pdf) for further information, including a list of 'at risk' occupations.

RESPIRATOR FIT TESTING

SHAPE provides free respirator fit testing of motion picture and performing arts workers in situations where air quality may be compromised.

Respirators may be required when creating smoke or fog effects on interior sets or when working in locations with compromised air quality. Producer(s) are responsible for the purchase of appropriate respirators (consult MSDS as required). Contact SHAPE for on-site fit testing.

Refer to SHAPE Safety Bulletin #10 - Artificially Created Smokes, Fogs and Lighting Effects (PDF) for further information.

SHAPE SAFETY BULLETINS

SHAPE provides Safety Guidelines for Motion Picture/Video Production in British Columbia. These guidelines cover industry standard practices for a wide variety of common safety issues.

By following the SHAPE Safety bulletins, laws, regulations and company policy and procedures, serious accidents and injuries can be prevented.

The SHAPE Safety Bulletins can be downloaded individually or as one complete package from our Safety Bulletins page.

SHAPE LIBRARY

SHAPE’S online Library offers free information and research related to health and safety in the Motion Picture/ Video Production and Performing Arts Industries. Posters and publications are also available by mail.

THINK SET SAFETY

The goal of the Think Set Safety Program is to establish safe work habits for grade 11 and 12 film and performing arts students by providing education and exercises related to basic arts safety fundamentals.

This program is aimed at students enrolled in Drama/Theatre, Film Production or Dance programs. The goal of the program is to help students develop and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of workplace safety within the arts.

To help teachers and instructors establish a safety culture and easily integrate arts safety into their curriculum, we’ve included a wide variety of material to promote discussion and awareness of common safety concerns that students and industry workers are likely to face. These include handouts and suggested activities/discussions that teachers may select from for their individual class and curriculum. The material is meant to compliment existing lesson plans where appropriate.

All the material comes on a 2 disc set - a CD containing all the materials that the instructor will need, such as hand-outs & discussion guidelines, and a DVD that contains two short films, one to demonstrate safety on the set and another that explains who SHAPE is. The entire package comes in an easy to store DVD case.

If you are an instructor who teaches Film and/or Performing arts related courses to high school students and would like to find out more about the Think Set Safety program (did we mention that it was available for free?), contact SHAPE at 604.733.4682 or by email.
